Answers to Your Questions
Q: How often should I see a dentist?
A: The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends visiting a dentist at least twice a year
for a checkup and professional cleaning.
Q: What should I expect during my first appointment?
A: During your first visit to Athens Oconee Dentistry, we will compile your medical and dental history, examine your teeth and gums, screen for oral cancer, and make x-rays of your teeth as needed. After we review your dental profile, we will discuss any options for treatment and fee payment, and help you determine the best plan to fit your needs.
Q: How often should I brush and floss?
A: Brush your teeth at least twice a day (especially before going to bed at night) with an ADA approved
soft bristle brush and toothpaste. Daily flossing is the best way to clean between the teeth and under
the gum line. Flossing not only helps clean these spaces, it disrupts plaque colonies from building up, preventing damage to the gums, teeth and bone.
Q: Are amalgam (silver) fillings safe?
A: The general consensus is yes. Along with the American Dental Association, the Center for Disease
Control (CDC), the World Health Organization, the FDA and others support the use of silver fillings
as safe, durable and cost effective. The ADA has had fewer than 100 reported incidents of an allergy
to components of silver fillings, and this is out of countless millions of silver fillings over the decades.
However, our office is happy to accommodate patients who prefer composite (white) fillings.
