Children can begin seeing the dentist around the age of three. Before this time, when baby teeth are still making their way into the mouth, oral care may include washing gums and new teeth with a moist cloth. This should be done after every feeding. We are happy to discuss with new parents the various steps they can take to protect their baby’s teeth in the years before professional care begins.

Preparing Your Child

Parents can find assistance in preparing their children for their first dental visit in books like Barney Visits the Dentist, Dora the Explorer-Show Me Your Smile and others.

Early care in the dental office is important for several reasons. Ideally, these first visits will revolve around the prevention of cavities and oral infection. Using comfortable methods such as our intra oral camera, digital x-rays, and laser cavity finder, our team works diligently to make visits positive for young children. We understand that the last thing a child or a parent needs is to feel frightened while in the dental chair! Dentistry is a completely new experience for your child and we will work hard to avoid stress during exams, cleanings, and treatments.

Dr. Nail places both composite resin fillings and those made with amalgam. Depending on the patient’s situation and factors such as the location and size of the cavity, one or the other material may be more appropriate. We understand that there is good cosmetic reason to choose composite resin fillings, especially for permanent teeth. What isn’t always understood is the complexity of placing composites. If this material cannot be fully isolated from saliva or other fluids, it is more likely to prematurely fail. Our goal is to provide you with the information you need to make the best decision about your child’s dental health. When Dr. Nail believes that an amalgam filling will be better suited to long-term results, he will discuss this with you.

Dr. Nail and the team at Athens Oconee Dentistry want to build trust with each of our patients. With children, we know that this is crucial to the attitude they develop about dentistry – an attitude they will carry with them for life.
